Games Review - Bogged
Michelle Sutton <[email protected]>
This month's review is of a game called Bogged. It is a
GUI Boggle clone written in tcl/tk and is very easy to use.
As always, it can be found in the games directory of the
FreeBSD ports
collection.
The aim of the game, like Boggle, is to find as many words
as you can out of the letters that Bogged provides you. It
follows most of Boggle's rules except that you don't have a
time limit. The screen is made up of a 4x4 grid of letter
buttons on the left and a space to record all the words you
have found on the right.
Once you elect to start a new game, it will randomly select
16 letters, scan through them to find all the different words
of three letters or more, and then lets you know how many it
found.
Now it's your turn to find as many words as you can. One
variation in this game that I enjoyed was when a word that
is not in the game's dictionary was entered, it would give
you a message like "Dang, I feel foolish", or "Stupid %$*#
dictionary!".
The general rules are that you cannot use the same letter
more than once in a single word. All words must have more
than three letters. When you find a word, you click the
corresponding letters on the Bogged letter buttons (as far
as I could tell, you cannot use your keyboard), and then
press the "Add Word to List" button. As you enter more
words, Bogged keeps track of how many you have entered, and
your percentage of the total that Bogged has found in the
grid.
I have enjoyed playing Bogged, although I could only play a
couple of games before I wanted to move on to something
else. It is a good "in-betweener" type game when you just
want a 5 minute break from your work.
