The FreeBSD 'zine
February 2000 : Newbies Corner

Newbies Corner
by The FreeBSDzine Crew <[email protected]>

Welcome to the first installment of the Newbies Corner column. Here we will attempt to address the needs of all of those users out there who are new to FreeBSD. However, even the veteran FreeBSD junkie may find some useful bits of information that he/she was unaware of. FreeBSD is made up of so many different programs and utilities, so it is highly unlikely that any given person will know about every single one.

Due to time constraints, this column is looking rather barren this time around. With a bit of luck, and maybe a few suggestions from our readers out there, next month will be able to bring you a column which is full of FreeBSD related everything

If you have a question or tip that you would like to have considered for inclusion in the column please email us at [email protected].

Fragments, Tips and Facts

Does your FreeBSD box have a Ethernet card? If so, then consider placing a small MS-DOS partition, during installation, at the very front of the drive. This will allow you to install a very minimal version of MS-DOS, along with the utilities that allow you to configure the various functions of your Ethernet card. This is particularly useful if you have an ISA Ethernet card.

Need a good way to interact with your FreeBSD server from a Windows machine? Tera Term is a good choice with the "all important" ssh support:

According to the BAFUG FreeBSD Counter Page, there are 45985 FreeBSD users out there.

Q & A Speak

Question

How can I strip HTML tags out of a HTML file?

Answer

Using lynx is the easiest way to do this..

	lynx -dump http://www.blah.com/blah.html > blah.txt

Be sure to replace the URL and text file with actual ones :-)
